Yoto Inc. Recalls 250,000 Yoto Mini Speakers Over Fire Hazard

Yoto Inc., a leading manufacturer of audio products for children, has issued a voluntary recall of more than 250,000 Yoto Mini speakers following concerns of potential fire hazards. The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), comes after reports of the lithium-ion batteries in the speakers overheating and posing risks of burns and fires to consumers.

The Yoto Mini speaker, designed for children aged 3 to 12, offers a range of audio entertainment options, including audiobooks, music, podcasts, and radio. Utilizing Yoto cards, the speaker provides a safe and engaging listening experience for young users. However, the recent discovery of battery overheating issues has prompted the recall.

According to the CPSC, there have been seven reported incidents of the battery on a Yoto Mini speaker overheating. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of these incidents, both by the company and the CPSC. Despite the absence of injuries, Yoto Inc. is taking proactive measures to address the safety concerns associated with the product.

The recalled Yoto Mini speakers were sold for approximately $70 each between November 2021 and April 2024. They were available for purchase at various retail stores and online platforms, including us.yotoplay.com, Amazon.com, Target.com, and maisonette.com. Consumers who have purchased these speakers during the specified period are urged to stop using them immediately.

To mitigate the risk posed by the overheating batteries, Yoto Inc. is offering consumers a free replacement smart charging cable. This replacement cable, known as the Yoto Mini Smart Cable, is designed to charge the battery to a safe level, thereby eliminating the risk of overheating. Consumers can obtain the free replacement cable by visiting Yoto's website and logging in with their account information. For those without an existing account, signing up for one is a simple process through the provided link.

To facilitate the replacement process, consumers are required to enter their speaker's serial number, a 14-digit code located on the bottom of the speaker, on Yoto's website. Additionally, consumers must use scissors, wire cutters, or pliers to cut their existing Yoto Mini USB charging cable and submit a photo of the cut cord. These steps are necessary to ensure the safe and efficient replacement of the charging cable.

Yoto Inc. has provided a dedicated FAQ section on its website, addressing common queries related to the smart cables and the recall process. Consumers can also reach out to the company via email at minihelp@yotoplay.com for further assistance or clarification regarding the recall. Furthermore, a toll-free helpline, 1-844-370-0426, is available to consumers from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday, for any additional inquiries or support needed.

In light of the recall, Yoto Inc. emphasizes the importance of prioritizing consumer safety and remains committed to ensuring the highest standards of quality and reliability for its products. The company urges all affected consumers to take immediate action by discontinuing the use of the recalled Yoto Mini speakers and obtaining the free replacement smart charging cable as soon as possible.

For consumers who have purchased the Yoto Mini speaker within the specified timeframe, it is essential to act promptly to prevent any potential risks associated with the product. By following the instructions provided by Yoto Inc. and the CPSC, consumers can help safeguard themselves and their families from the hazards posed by the overheating batteries in the Yoto Mini speakers.
